Abstract

In this study, color names seen in the place names of Sarıveliler district are discussed in terms of frequency, type of location, meaning and function they add to the name of place. Documentary scanning method and compilation method are used in this study. The material is obtained from maps, official sources and field collections. 191 place names have been found based on color in Sarıveliler. The most encountered is the name of position. In these names 7 words (arap, aydınlık, gün, ışıklı, ışılık, karanlık, kör) are used to indicate color with 14 different color names (ak, akça, ala, boz, gök, gökçe, göv, kara, kır, kızıl, kızılca, kök, sarı, yeşil). The number of place names created with base colors are 163. White, land, red are the most used colors. Colors are used for the function of "transferring the basic attribute of something" in the most of place names. Except for two of the words used as color name (arap, kör), all are in Turkish. The names found in Sarıveliler indicate that the place names of the people of the region is not disconnected from Turkish culture.
