Abstract

The phrase azıglıg toŋuz täg, which is in the 3rd line of the Uybat VI (E98)Inscription, has generally been translated as "like a tusked boar". The word azıglıgis used in the 6th line of the East side of the Köl İç Çor Inscription, and here, too, it hasbeen translated as either "untamed, wild" or "having a tusk". The space in the KÇInscription has generally been filled with toŋuz, and the phrase has been completedas azıglıg toŋuz.It has been thought that rather than translating the phrase azıglıg toŋuz teg, whichis in Uybat VI (E98) Inscription, as "like a tusked boar", translating it as "untamed, wild, like a wild boar" will be more appropriate. In this sense, azıglıg, which is usedin both Uybat VI and the KÇ Inscription, is the same word, and it has been used in themeaning of "untamed, wild, ferocious".It is clear that in today's Turkish of Turkey, too, it has been used in the meaning ofazılı 1. 'Gözü bir şeyden yılmayan, azgın'. 2. mecaz 'Çok şiddetli, korkunç' (TürkçeSözlük 167), and is made from the the verb az- (run wild).
