Loanwords put into operations in Old Turkish texts

Abstract

All living languages on earth interact with other languages. This interaction leads to the exchange of words between languages. This exchange can be based on social, political, religious and economic reasons. In addition, this exchange causes some foreign elements to enter the vocabulary. Turkic Language has taken words from foreign languages like other languages throughout history; however, it has always been able to put them into a form of its own, in other words Turkificate it. This Turkification can be phonetical, morphological or semantic. In this article, we discussed the morphological Turkification of borrowing words in verse texts in Old Uighur Turkish. Although the borrowing words in the language can be found since the Orkhun Inscriptions, which are the oldest written sources we can reach, the entry of many foreign-origin words belonging to newly recognized belief systems such as Manichaeism and Buddhism during the Old Uighur Turkish period makes this period special. In the introduction section of the study, basic judgments related to the subject are emphasized and similar studies are given. In the review section, the etymological explanations/opinions on the words put into operation with the suffixes included in the texts discussed are compiled. In the conclusion section, the data collected were evaluated.
