Abstract

The paper deals with the antanaclasis in one of the most voluminous sources of Old Turkish, Ashik Pasha's Garib-name (XIVth c.), that includes many antanaclasis occurences. Due to the number of the words, the antanaclasis cases are divided into simple and complex categories with their sub-groups. The classification of simple antanaclasis into the noun, verb and mixed groups is based on the parts of speech. Other subcategories of simple antanaclasis are identified according to the manifestation of homonymy or polysemy in the shapes of the elements. The complex antanaclasis classification into three subcategories is based on the "common word" inclusion criterion. One more classification of antanaclasis is based on the shape of its parts: (i) both pronounciation and spelling of the consisting elements of antanaclasis are the same, (ii) there are some differences in the sound or (iii) spelling patterns. The cases of antanaclasis in Garib-name are so many that the paper presents plenty examples of them, at least four examples for each of the groups and sub-groups.The meaning of the lines containing antanaclasis are explained. Especially, the cases of antanaclasis earlier considered as redifs were subjected to reanalysis and their meanings are clarified.
