Abstract

According to our current knowledge, translations made from Chagatai to Ottoman Turkish consist of two prose works and a masnavi which belong to Nevayi. One of these works Tevarih-i Muluk-i Acem, which deals with the history of Iranian ruler dynasties, was written at the end of the 15th century and translated to Ottoman Turkish in the 16th century. When the text is compared with its translation with regard to the structure of compound sentences, it can be seen that there are some differences between Chagatai and Ottoman Turkish that have not been examined before. These distinctions are particularly noteworthy in terms of clause subordination constructed according to Indo-European syntax which are found abundantly in both texts. In the Chagatai text, it can be observed that the Indo-European subordination model is used with more diverse functions and more frequently than its Ottoman translation. Sometimes subjunctors copied from Persian and the Turkic adverbial verbs are combined to subordinate the clauses to a superordinate sentence. There are no examples of such structures in the Chagatai text while various types of these hybrid forms can be found in its translation.
