Abstract

The written literary texts of Turkish in historical periods constitute a source for scanning and researching the structures of speech acts and the verbs that carry verbal power, showing that they have more than one meaning apart from the dictionary meaning. In this respect, written literary texts in Turkish are valuable for pragmatics. In this study, it is aimed to determine the verbs and verb phrases that carry verbal power in the Story of The Good And The Bad Prince of the Buddhist environment in the Old Uighur Turkish Period and to interpret and explain these verbs in the context of the text. Since verbs that carry verbal power meet more than one meaning value in the context of the text, it was preferred to examine the structures of speech acts in pragmatics by scanning from the text within the study area. In this respect, discourse analysis was used as a qualitative research method in the study.According to the findings, the verbs that carry verbal power in the text of the story consist of verbs used for commissive, directive and expressive purposes according to their frequency of occurrence. In the related classification, it has been determined that the verbs have a rich communicative meaning value in the context of the text with more than one meaning value by the speakers. In the study, it has been determined thatsome verbs have different usage characteristicsin different contexts for the purpose of more than one verb and these usages are presented to attention with tables. It has been observed that the frequency of the verbs used for directive and commissive purposes is close to each other. In addition, the verbs used for expressive purposes were examined in terms of their positive and negative meaning values. It is thought that the study will contribute to the studies in the field in terms of showing the richness and depth of the usage power and communicative meaning values of the verbs specific to Turkish culture in the written literary texts of the historical periods of Turkish.
