Abstract

A substantive portion of the problems in the grammar of Turkey Turkish is comingfrom non-functional terminology. The idea to perform a reform in the terminologydates back to Tanzimat era but it did not attract much attention. This issue was again made an agenda as Turkishization of Concepts by GençKalemler in the II. Meşrutiyet era. However, discussions about purifying Turkish overshadowed terminology issues and important developments were not performedin this issue. In the republic period, this issue was considered as an educational problem.Following Language Revolution the first national curriculum was developed in 1929.After the introducing the new curriculum, the necessity of Turkishization in educationcame to picture. Turkish Language Research Society (Türk Dili Tetkik Cemiyeti) wasfounded in 1932 and then Turkhisation of the terms were carried out by the commissions.Corresponding Turkish words were coined for the foreign words mostlyArabic. However, because an important portion of the terms coined was not commonlyaccepted, a unity in terminology was achieved. This situation negatively affected researchand development as well as education.
